Creekview Elementary School Prinicipal Keith Palmer visited the members of the Carbon School Board during their Wednesday evening meeting to provide information on the upcoming mascot change.
Palmer explained that this began over the summer as he met with teachers and leadership teams, where it became quickly evident that they did not want to use their current mascot, the Chief. They were concerned about the mascot being used inappropriately and becoming offensive. This decision was not following any complaints, but the school wishes to have a mascot that is fun and without worry.
The entire leadership team voted to pursue a new mascot, with the PTA agreeing. The procedure begins with the students nominating potential mascots. The potentials will be screened by a committee of teachers, parents, students, PTA and more to weed out any that could be just as problematic.
Following this, students will then vote on those that the committee determines acceptable. A new logo will be created following that with a reveal to the students during the last week of school. There are no permanent features that will need to be replaced and there is no request for anything too expensive.
Palmer concluded by expressing that the school wants something more user-friendly and fun for the students.
