Carbon, Emery and Pinnacle high school athletes competed in the Highland Invitational on Wednesday. Emery’s sophomore Jess Christiansen had the best time out of all the area’s runners with a 16:07.2 time in the 2.9 mile long race. That time put him in 36th place out of all classifications of runners in the state.

Seniors Ryan and Chad Page finished one and two for Carbon with times of 16:39.2 and 16:45.7 for the 69th and 80th spots, respectively. The competition is evident from top to bottom of the opening race as eleven spots separated the Dinos in a six second time span. Thomas Boyden from Skyline won the event with a 14:47.7 time.

The Dinos did a good job recovering from a poor start. As a team, they were in 36th after one mile and were able to jump up to 26th after the second mile. Carbon finished in 22nd place as a team. Emery did not have a team finish as Jess was the only Spartan to make the varsity cut.

Carbon’s Grace Broadbear finished second overall in girls’ 3A behind Kylah Richs of Grand. Ambree Jones did well in her inaugural race for the Lady Dinos and took ninth overall in state in the freshman race. Landen Hardy ended with a time of 20:16.2 to led the Panthers and Kemery Stuckenschneider did the same for the Lady Panthers with a 28:17.8 time.

“It was hot,” stated Carbon’s head coach Telisse Martak. “Lots of athletes were passing out on the course from dehydration and heat exhaustion. It was a crowded race and [we] fought from behind the entire race. Overall, it was a great day.”

The Carbon team had added motivation as the team was racing as family members and friends of those that were involved in the Pinnacle Peak accident last week.
