The night before Carbon High School’s 2017 graduation ceremony, another special ceremony was hosted inside the school’s auditorium. This year’s sports teams and athletes were honored at the Carbon High ESPY Awards Ceremony.
The evening began with a parade of athletes, in which the male and female athletes from each sport in the school joined on the stage to a hearty round of applause from the audience. Afterward, Ted Bianco gave the welcoming address and invited guest speakers Perry and Brooke Laulu to the stage.
The Laulu’s are a married couple that were both entwined in the sports scene at Carbon High. Brooke was a cheerleader all three years of high school and was under the instruction of Trish Anderson. Perry played many sports and had a father who was once a coach himself for the school.
The duo spoke primarily of teamwork, unity and the benefits playing sports provides later in life. Once the guests speakers were finished with their respective speeches, it was time to honor the teams. Beginning with football, volleyball and boys’ golf, the coaches worked their way through each sport.
Awards such as the Colombo Award, given to Alex Thayne, and the Besiack Award, given to Nathan Olsen, were spotlighted through the evening. Special awards such as the Most Inspirational Athletes and the Sportsmanship Award were also given during the program.
