The Carbon Dinos teed off their first region tournament of the season at Cedar Ridge Golf Course on Thursday. The team narrowly missed a first place finish by one stroke.

Coming in first in the tournament was Richfield with 342. Carbon was just behind with 343 while North Sanpete and Canyon View tied for third with 344. Juab finished the day with 408.

“It was a close match, but it should have never been there,” head coach Tom King said. “This team should have 320 at least.”

Ryker Smith led the Dinos with 78, just behind the lead scorer from Canyon View, who shot 77. Kayden Alderson came in second for the team with 84 followed by Tyler Moynier with 89. Ryan Gagon rounded out the scoring with 92. Wyatt Henrie and Joey Penovich also played for Carbon, shooting 93 and 94, respectively. King has a young team this year with three of the top golfers at the tournament, Smith, Gagon and Moynier, being only sophomores.

Two JV golfers also made an appearance for Carbon at the tournament. Dyson Blackburn hit 94 while Hayden Bonacci finished with 116.

King explained that he was impressed with Moynier and Blackburn as they stepped up in the tournament.

Next up for the Dinos is a tournament at Soldier Hollow, the home of this year’s state competition, on Aug. 27.
