Over the weekend at the Sevier Valley Center in Richfield, the 3A State Wrestling Duels took place with both Emery and Carbon grapplers participating. Emery had a strong tournament, placing second out of 16 teams. Juab won the tournament while Carbon finished seventh.

There were several Spartan wrestlers that had solid performances throughout the weekend. Byron Christiansen (106), Jarin Allen (113) and Agustus Dalton (160) all finished undefeated and on top in their respective weight classes. Byron dominated with eight pins in eight matches in under six total minutes of wrestling time in the tournament. Allen finished 9-0 with five pins and one technical fall while Dalton also ended the weekend 9-0 with eight pins and one technical fall. In addition for Emery, Jess Christiansen wrestled in the 106 class and finished 6-1 in the tournament. Korby Christiansen (120) had five pins and ended the tournament 5-1 as McKay Meccariello (152) went 8-1 with five pins.

Emery High head coach Kirk Christiansen could not hold back his excitement after the weekend. “There was a really close duel with South Summit and we had some big [matches] there that helped us clinch the win,” he said. “The team is staring to peak. We will go and learn from the tape. We had better scores against Juab than anyone else and look forward to some rematches with them in the postseason. We had some amazing wrestling from our second string guys who filled in on other Varsity teams. It was a great week for Emery.”

Dino wrestler Bobby Blake (138) had an undefeated tournament as he went 6-0 while recording five pins. Conner Fausett (145) also represented Carbon well and went 5-1 with three pins. Carbon will travel to Juab on Thursday for a duel and then to Vernal this coming weekend for a tournament.

Emery heads to a tournament in Gunnison on Friday to help prepare them for the the upcoming Intermountain West Invitational Tournament on Jan. 18-19, a multi-state tournament. Coach Christiansen concluded with a shoutout. “I am really grateful for all our coaches but especially Justin Thornley. Without him, our program wouldn’t work.”
