The Carbon Dinos struggled at the Steve Hodson Cancer Classic last week, falling to three teams in as many days.
Carbon started the tournament on Thursday against Canyon View where first half shooting woes doomed the team to a 69-40 loss. With just 12 points in the first half, the Dinos were not able to make a comeback after the break. Canyon View’s Brantzen Blackner was unstoppable against the Carbon squad, chipping in 35 points.
Senior Ryan Gagon led the Dinos with 13 points to go along with 12 rebounds. Jordan Vasquez and Derek Hillam were just behind with 11 points apiece.
Carbon looked to rebound the following day against South Sevier but walked away with a 56-37 loss. Sophomore Brady Gagon powered the team with 10 points, a season high. Six others Dinos recorded points in the game.
The final game of the tournament pitted Carbon against Panquitch. A slow start in the first half once again doomed the Dinos as they recorded the 73-51 loss.
Vasquez scored the Dinos’ tournament high in the game, notching 20 points, including four from downtown. Ryan Gagon added 13 to the score followed by Hillam with 10.
Carbon (3-10, 2-0 Region 14) will return to region play on Friday as the team travel to Maeser Prep (5-4, 1-1 Region 14) for a 7 p.m. tip.
