The Carbon High boys golf team continued to tally up points with a region win at home on Thursday. The Dinos finished with an eight-shot win over Richfield with a total score of 324.

Rounding out the region roster was North Sanpete, Juab and Payson, all of whom fell to Carbon.

Playing in the varsity matchup on Thursday was Ryker Smith, Joey Penovich, Ryan Gagon, Andrew Kotter, Stephen Butkovich and Wyatt Henrie. Smith finished with the low score of the day with a 71. Penovich scored 83, Gagon 84, Kotter 86, Butkovich 87 and Henrie 90.

The junior varsity team had a strong showing as well. Kayden Alderson shot a 76, leading the way for the junior varsity team. Kasey Moynier finished with a 96, Dyson Blackburn 95, Kreed Keele 92, Tyler Moynier 92, Hayden Bonacci 89, Zade Carrillo 85, Krey Keele 97 and Kelton Larsen scored 116.

According to Dinos coach Tom King, the team could have won by more if Alderson had played in the varsity matchup rather than in the junior varsity competition. “Kayden shot a 76 to lead JV,” King explained. “We only play six at the varsity level and we have 15 players.”

Because the team is comprised of talented players, it is difficult to decide which players will compete at the varsity level at any given meet. One thing is certain, Carbon will finish strong this season. “We should win region this year,” King stated. “Our main goal is to make it to state, which we should.”

Currently, Carbon is ranked first in the region with a 12-shot lead over second-ranked North Sanpete. The Dinos will look to extend their region lead as they compete on North Sanpete’s home course this Wednesday.
