The Carbon High boys soccer team has started the season with a series of victories to skyrocket the team to the top of the Region 12 standings. The team sits at 5-1-1 on the season and perfect in region play with a 2-0 record.

The Dinos started their season on a high note in early March against South Summit. The team walked away with an exciting 2-1 win.

“Carbon’s goals were scored by Oscar Jeppson and Jamin Jensen,” head coach Chad Codwell explained. “Oscar’s goal was a goal of a lifetime as he shot a volley into the back of the net off of a rebound after a free kick. Jamin scored the game winner when he shot a rope into the top right corner of the net from about 25 yards out.”

Carbon then traveled to Hurricane for a tournament on March 5. The team played three games in three days, going 1-1-1. In the first matchup against Hurricane, Carbon’s Taylor Bradley and Hurricane’s Traycen Shamo both notched goals as the teams battled to a draw.

Next, the team took on Beaver High. Although the Dinos finished with a 3-1 win over Beaver, Codwell knew the team played even better than the score reflected.

“Carbon outplayed Beaver throughout the match but the score did not indicate the level of play that they are capable of playing,” Codwell said.

Carbon finished the Hurricane Tournament with a game against Snow Canyon. Snow Canyon proved tough for the Dinos as they dropped the game, 8-0.

Since the shutout game that ended the tournament, the Dinos have won three straight, notching wins against Grantsville, Juab and North Sanpete.

Sam Loveland was the key player in the 2-1 win against Grantsville.

“Sam Loveland was the man of the match as he netted both of Carbon’s goals en route to victory,” Codwell explained. “Sam’s first goal was a beautiful header into the back of the net off of a lofty cross from Taylor Bradley. Sam’s second goal found the back of the net from about 18 yards out and put Carbon into the lead for good.”

The Dinos winning streak continued in their first region game of the season against Juab. Once again, Loveland proved useful as he netted both goals in the 2-0 win.

Finally, to put the team’s record at 5-1-1 on the season, Carbon secured a 2-1 win over region competitor North Sanpete on Tuesday.Bradley and Loveland each found the back of the net for a win over the Hawks.

The Carbon Dinos will now have a short break in their schedule. Their next region match is scheduled for Wednesday, March 25 in Payson. The Dinos will then host Richfield on March 27. Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m.
