The Carbon Dinos took part in the 3A baseball and softball playoffs this past week and found success, as both will be competing this week for a chance at state titles.

The baseball team got two, one-run wins over Park City and Cedar on Saturday.

The first was a 14-inning barnburner against a pesky Park City team at Juan Diego High School. Cole Fossat pitched 10 innings and gave up just one earned run and eight hits. He also struck out 12 batters and went 4-6 from the plate with a home run and a double. Dallyn Mower had a home run on three hits, as did Chase Morgan. Park City tied the game in bottom of the seventh at two apiece to push the game into extra innings. Nobody scored until the top of the 14th when Carbon pushed across a run to advance with the 3-2 score.

The team then made the trip to Pleasant Grove to take on Cedar later that afternoon after the Redmen upset Juan Diego 13-7. The Dinos got a huge pitching performance from Mitch Olsen who tossed the complete game while giving up just one earned run. Down 3-0 going into the sixth, Fossat bashed a three-run homer to tie the score. The Dinos then got a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the seventh to take the walk-off win 4-3, propelling them to the 3A quarterfinals on Thursday in Kearns. Carbon will take on defending 3A champion Pine View at 11 a.m. at Gates Field in Salt Lake City.

The Lady Dinos took on Stansbury on Thursday in the #2-#3 matchup in St. George. The Stallions beat the Dinos 6-3 to send Carbon to the loser’s bracket. Kinley Nelson was credited with the loss in the circle. Kelsey Sorenson had two doubles and a single. Chandelle Nichols had two RBIs on a double and a single.

Carbon then faced off against Morgan in the loser’s bracket. The Lady Dinos got a dominant performance from McKenna Sorenson in the 13-3 win. She also had three singles and four RBIs. Alex Thayn also drove in four runs on a home run and a double. Kelsey Sorenson also had three hits.

The Lady Dinos will await the loser of the 2 p.m. game between Grantsville and Cedar on Thursday at the Valley Complex in Taylorsville. Game time will be at 4:15.
