The Carbon Dino boys basketball team opened preseason play this week. They dropped their first game to 4A Maple Mountain 35-88 on Tuesday. Their home opener against Snow Canyon was closer, but still one in the L column at 58-42.

On Tuesday Cole Fossat  was the lead score for the Dinos with 12 points, hitting three treys. No other Dino put up more than four. Coach Jeff Cisneros said that the lopsided score did not reflect a lack of defense, but the Carbon offense was absent. He said it is going to be a learning process throughout the year.

Cisneros said that there was a better effort on Wednesday night. Carbon’s zone defense is their strong point and it is part of what held down the Snow Canyon offense. The Dino offense is still in flux. Garrett Blanc  lead the DInos with 15, including  four from beyond the arc.

Snow Canyon’s press stifled the DIno offense early in the game. When Snow took the press off the Dinos were able to score and posted 21 points in the fourth quarter.

Cisneros said that the team does not have solid ball handlers and so they are passing a little more than they need to. This is leading to many turnovers. On Tuesday they had well over 40. This is one of the issues that the team is going to be working on in the next few weeks.

The team continues to work hard and Cisneros said that fans need to stay patient. He sees a lot of potential in the players on the floor, but the progress will take place over time.
