Needing a 3A North victory to keep their playoff hopes alive, the Carbon Dinos couldn’t maintain their momentum in a matchup with fellow region member Grantsville Friday night on homecoming. Grantsville used a huge third quarter to run away with a 35-13 win.
After failed opening possessions by both teams, Grantsville blocked a Carbon punt with just under nine minutes to play in the first quarter that set up a Cowboy touchdown just three plays later to give Grantsville a 6-0 lead.
The score would stay at 6-0 until the Dinos’ final possession of the first half when they drove 58 yards in just 25 seconds to take a 7-6 lead. Bradlee Chatterton punched it in from four yards out to give Carbon the lead. Logan Olsen’s 48-yard reception set up the Chatterton TD run. Grantsville then scored as time expired in the quarter on a 33-yard run by quarterback Riley Smith to make it 14-7 at the break.
Two quick touchdowns by the Cowboys in the third in less than six minutes pushed the score to 28-7.
Carbon scored its final points of the game on a four-yard TD pass and catch from Taylor Rasmussen to Peyton Fausett with 2:32 remaining to end the game 35-13.
Carbon will be on the road the next two weeks as it will travel to Morgan (4-2, 1-1 3A North) on Oct. 2 and at Juan Diego (5-1, 2-0 3A North) Oct. 9.
