The Department of Workforce Services research and analysis department announced that the Spring 2019 Local Insights were recently published.

In Carbon County, the year-to-year changes in non-farm jobs rose by 377. As the county is led by the mining sector, the economy showed what was reported as a strong expansion throughout the 2018 year.

While a portion of the first quarter growth occurred because of industry as well as location re-coding, Carbon County is still viewing a healthy amount of job gains. It was also reported that unemployment remained flat and gross taxable sales are up. The aforementioned 377 jobs in the county meant a 4.4 percent growth rate that compared favorably to that of the state, which was at only 3.1 percent.

Over 34 percent of the job gains in the county were credited to the mining industry. However, trade/transportation/utilities, leisure and hospitality as well as government all assisted in the rise.

Carbon County’s unemployment rate dipped recently and was shown to be sitting at 4.1 percent as recently as February 2019. Similar reports were released pertaining to all things job related in Emery County.

The change in non-farm jobs rose by 208. This is a great change for the county as it suffered a job loss territory in 2017 but began creating new jobs once again in the 2018 year. While it was reported that the rate of growth has slowed, Emery County was still able to rise in the past 12 months.

There was an overall employment increase of 6.8 percent and education, healthcare and the social assistance industry were credited to seeing a whopping 68 job jump in employment over the year. These departments drove a majority of the job growth in the county.
