Eagles Fall Short Against the Bruins

Press Release

The Utah State Eastern baseball team lost in a four-game sweep against the Salt Lake Community College Bruins last weekend in West Jordan.

During game one of the series on Friday, the Eagles opened the game with a 1-0 lead thanks to a Zach Lundell grounder that brought Jesse Rowley home to score.

Salt Lake’s Trent Griffin was on the hill for the Bruins and pitched a complete game, only allowing the Eagles to have two hits and one run. The Bruins would go on to score three runs in the third to get the 3-1 victory.

Friday’s game two matchup saw both teams put a lot of runs on the board compared to the first game. The Bruins defeated the Eagles 12-8 in nine innings.

Cole Fossat and Rowley each had three RBIs with multiple hits in game two. Rowley also had a triple and two stolen bases for the Eagles.

On Saturday, the Eagles could not cross home plate in game three and lost to the Bruins, 2-0.

Chase Stratton was on the mound for the Eagles and pitched all six innings, only allowing three hits and two runs. Stratton’s opponent in the game Ben Weese pitched six innings for the Bruins and allowed three hits with eight strikeouts.

In the series finale, the Eagles lost another close game to the Bruins in a game that went to extra innings.

A Colin Wilson single in the top of the first inning scored two runs to give the Eagles a strong start to begin the game.

Lundell was on the mound for the Eagles and kept the lead safe until Salt Lake’s Jared Newbry hit an RBI single in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game.

A Lundell RBI single and a Chase Stratton sacrifice fly scored two more runs in the top of the fifth to put USU Eastern up 4-2. Salt Lake cut the lead to 4-3 in the next half of the inning with an RBI single by Kam Lane.

With the score 5-3 heading into the bottom of the eight inning, the Bruins tied the game with an RBI triple hit by Mitch Berryhill.

The Bruins were able to break the tie and win the game 6-5 in the bottom of the 10 inning when Nick Seginow hit an RBI double to score Kody Hall from second base.

After the road series against SLCC, the Eagles now will have three consecutive series at home to finish the regular season.

This Friday and Saturday, they will host the College of Southern Nevada Coyotes. Each day’s doubleheaders begin at noon at the Utah State Eastern baseball field.
