The Emery County Domestic Violence Coalition kicked off its inaugural domestic violence training and officer appreciation event last week. The day began with a general introduction to domestic violence and an explanation of the lethality assessment. The speaker for these two discussions was Amy Hernandez, who is the Domestic Violence Program Coordinator in Salt Lake City.
Survivors of domestic violence shared their courageous and heartfelt experiences and officers were recognized for going above and beyond the call of duty. Sheriff Greg Funk awarded four officers for their actions when handling recent domestic violence calls. Andy Wall, AJ O’Neil, Jeff Newland and Brooks Smith were the officers awarded. In turn, the coalition and the other officers awarded Sheriff Funk for his honorable service and thanked him for his constant support of Emery County.
That wasn’t the end of the awards, however. Jennifer Justesen was recognized for her caring and sincere concern for domestic violence victims. Kathy Anderson also received an appreciation award for her hard work and service. The day was wrapped up after a discussion on protective orders.
The Emery County Domestic Violence Coalition wished to give a special to thank you to the sponsors of the event. Without their support and generosity, this event wouldn’t have been made possible: Emery County Commissioners, BK’s Stop-N-Shop, JN Auto, Barnes Plumbing & Excavating, Stewart’s Market and Magnuson Lumber.
The Emery County Domestic Violence Coalition hopes to bring this training back next year and, as always, continue to offer resources and assistance to victims of domestic violence.
