Riata Christiansen, the 17-year-old daughter of Kirk and Mistie Christiansen, was chosen as the 2017 Utah High School Rodeo Association state queen on Wednesday afternoon in Heber City.
Chosen from a field of six contestants, Christiansen will now represent Utah at the national competition in Gillette, Wyoming in July. Christiansen was previously the State Junior High Queen and now advanced to the high school title by winning the following categories: horsemanship, speech, impromptu questioning, test, appearance and personality. Christiansen received many prizes including a saddle, buckle and crown.
This tradition of crowning a high school rodeo queen began in 1975. It has been a year of hard work but paid off in the end for this Emery rodeo team member.
