Emery Goes Three Games in Playoffs, Suffers Heartbreak Loss to Gunnison to End Season

After three games at the state playoffs on Thursday, the Lady Spartans fell to Gunnison to knock the team out of the tournament.

Emery started the day with a matchup against Enterprise. Ashton Bell’s two home runs were not enough as the Wolves bashed out 15 runs for the win, 15-8. Jarica Huntington and Jayla Weston also assisted the Spartans’ efforts with a home run. Both teams notched a run in the first inning of the game. Emery then hit a dry spell, not scoring another run until the fourth. Enterprise used the Spartan’s setback to gain a cushioned lead, notching runs in each inning.

The Spartans got a chance for a comeback in the one-loss bracket where they met up with Rowland Hall. Emery smashed the team, 28-7. Emery got a quick start in the first inning, scoring 10 runs. Another 15 in the second inning put the team up 25-7 going into the third. The Lady Spartans notched three more runs before the game ended after just three innings. Bell was once again impressive for Emery, bashing two more home runs, which were both Grand Slams, as well as two doubles. Jacie Huntington hit a double and a triple in the game.

With the advance, Emery met Gunnison in its final game of the day, ending the tournament with a heartbreak loss, 9-8. Emery got a narrow lead in the first, going up 2-1. The Spartans scored two more in the second. Gunnison answered with one run in the third and four in the fourth. Emery rounded out its scoring with one in the fifth and three in the sixth. Gunnison came back for the win at the bottom of the seventh with three runs. Bell notched another home run in the loss. Taylor Payne bashed one home run and Kambrie Hinkins hit a double.

Emery finished the season at 10-20 and 3-5 in region play.
