The start of basketball is finally here! Emery High’s basketball tryouts in both boys and girls ball wrapped up last week signaling the start of an exciting basketball season.

For the boys’ team, Coach Jeffs kept twenty-one boys. The seniors are Corbin Barnett, David Dyer, Dawson Jensen, Brendon Jorgenson, Spencer Labrum, Curtis Mason and Logan Tuttle. Juniors include Otis Addison, Mcklane Allred, Bay Faimalo, Gavin McDermott and Drexler Tanner. There are eight sophomores; Kevin Butler, Kadian Denison, Jackson Jensen, Tai Justice, Ridge Nielson, Tyson Roper, Jordan Tuttle and Dillon Wilstead. Beau Roundy is the only freshman on this year’s squad. The coaches for the Spartans are head coach Todd Jeffs, assistant Jared Butler and assistant Scott Stilson. This year’s team has a lot of experience with quite a few returning players from last season. The Spartans also have good depth with a mix of guards and height. The loss of Logan Tuttle to a foot injury will hurt the Spartans somewhat, but they have the players to step in and cover his position. Look for the Spartan’s to challenge South Sevier for the region championship.

The girls’ team has eighteen players this year. The two seniors are Shelby Allred and Jeridi Price. There are three juniors on the team; Sidnee Conder, Kelsie Cox and Hannah Dyer. The sophomores are Ashlynn Allred, Ashton Bell, Kambrie Hinkins, Lexie Huntington, Cassidy Labrum, Lacy McElprang, Emily Olsen and Bailey Rasmussen. The Lady Spartans also have five freshman; Aniston Curtis, Bayler Griffin, Paytn Jeffs, Camrey Johnson and Jessica Olsen. There have been a few changes to the Lady Spartan’s coaching. Coach Lara Sterns moved away and Brink Griffin and Ty Jensen have come on to help along with Brandy King, head coach Dean Stilson. The team is young this year with thirteen of the players being sophomores or freshman. The team has talent and if they play to their strengths could be a force headed to the state playoffs.

We have a lot to look forward to this year and Emery seems prepared to break into the season on a positive note. Both the boys and girls team kick off their seasons with away games, the boys playing at Enterprise and the girls playing at Manti on November 20th for the first games of the year.
