It wasn’t always pretty, but the Emery Spartans picked up a big win over cross-county rival Carbon Monday night in Price, 57-54. In a game that featured 57 free throws and countless ties and lead changes, Emery was able to do just enough to pick up their eighth win in nine tries. Carbon fell to 4-5 on the season.

Emery’s Beau Roundy scored the first five points for the Spartans, but Cole Fossat and Kyle Quinton powered the Carbon offense to a five-point lead at the end of the first quarter, 10-5.

The second featured the biggest lead for either team as Mitch Olson hit one of two free throws at the 7:10 mark of the second to push the lead to nine, 14-5. The Spartans then went on a 12-3 run to tie the game at 17 on two free throws by Koby Butler at the 3:11 mark. Butler finished the game with 13 points. The Dinos took a 27-24 lead into halftime.

After 32 first half free throws, both teams continued their aggressiveness in the second as they both traded buckets and leads during the quarter. Neither team led by more than three in the frame.

Bowdie Jacobson opened the fourth with a floater to give the Spartans back the lead 42-41 before Carbon’s Gage Daughterty nailed a three to tie the game back up at 44. Fossat hit his fifth three of the game with 3:25 to go to put Carbon up by five, 54-49. Emery finished the game on an 8-0 run, which included back-to-back buckets by Butler and a reverse layin by Roundy. Jacobson and Zac Jorgensen both split a pair of free throws in the waning seconds of the game.

Fossat led all scorers in the game with 23 points. Quinton pitched in 13 off the bench and Brad Willliams was up next with five points.

Jacobson led the Spartans with 17 points. Kolton Butler chipped in nine and Roundy finished with eight.

Emery will enter the Christmas break on a five-game win streak, with the last four coming in the past six days. The team won’t play until Jan. 6 against North Sanpete at home. Carbon will look to rebound at the Steve Hodson Cancer Classic at Canyon View High School beginning on Dec. 28.
