Last year was an exciting one filled with many accomplishments from the Emery High swim team as the girls won their region and the boys took state. The Spartans are hoping not to skip a beat as they open this season and defend their respective titles.
According to their coaches, Andrea Johansen, Kaylee VanWagoner and Lance Whitesel, the current team might even be better than last year’s.
“They are the most prepared group we have had so far and are further along than normal,” the coaching staff shared.
Emery will have 13 meets this year and expect not only to compete well against the competition in the lanes next to them but they are looking to dethrone record holders in several events. Keldan Guymon is working to record a sub 50 100 free and break the record in the 50 free. Others looking to break records are Lexi Johansen in the 200 and 500 free, Haley Guymon in the breaststroke, Kaelee Hooley in the 100 free and 200 IM, and, finally, both boys’ and girls’ relay teams.
Rollen Hall and Carbon will be the biggest threats for the girls while Grand will be tough competition for the boys, coaching staff shared.
“We are really proud of them. They are a great group of kids and are working really hard,” coach Johansen, VanWagoner and Whitesel concluded.
Principal Gordon might have summed it up best, “There is a lot of hype for the swim team this year.”
