Emery Spartans Take to the Pool in Home Contest *Photo Gallery*

The Emery High swim team dominated over the visiting Gunnison Bulldogs Friday afternoon with both the boys’ and girls’ teams taking first-place finishes overall by margins of over 150 points.

The girls’ team started strong with a second-place finish in the 200-yard medley relay thanks to Sydney Terwilleger, Laci Hulse, Tarryn Parkins and Jocee Funk. Erin Oliverson grabbed a first in the 200-yard freestyle with a finish of 2:32.31. Teammates Angellena Migliori and Brynne Urie grabbed second and third in the same race.

Freshman Kaelee Hooley grabbed a first in the 200-yard IM with a final time of 2:47.52. Alexis Johansen grabbed second while Abigail Olsen managed third as well. Katie Carter continued work for the Black and Gold with a 28.73 first-place finish in the 50-yard freestyle. Emery’s BriAnne Bass grabbed second as well.

Lady Spartan Makyan Nielson finished second in the 100-yard butterfly with Carter returning for first in the 100-yard freestyle and a time of 1:03.51. Bass and Terwilleger also competed in the event, taking second and third, respectively.

Oliverson grabbed a first in the 500-yard free, adding more points for Emery with her 7:16.09 finish. Freshmen Urie and Raqeulle Simmons responded to take second and third finishes in the 500. Emery’s team composed of Migliori, Terwilleger, Oliverson and Carter managed a first in the 200-yard freestyle relay, clocking in at 2:03.67. Emery’s B-team for the event, consisting of Nielson, Feride Yespayeva, Funk and Shiloh Hayward, grabbed third.

Hooley and Olsen finished second and third in the 100-yuard backstroke, and Johansen added another first for Emery with a 1:30.38 finish in the 100-yard breaststroke. Teammate Tarryn Parkins grabbed third as well.

Emery represented in the 400-yard freestyle relay, with its two teams the sole participants. The A-team with Johansen, Hooley, Oliverson and Bass grabbed first with 4:34.13 while the B-team of Parkins, Olsen, Nielson and Hulse grabbed second.

The boys started off their events with a first-place, 1:51.55 finish in the 200-yard medley relay courtesy of Keldan Guymon, Daryl Guymon, Stilson and Nate Gilbert. The school’s B-team composed of Colton Willson, Jonathan Seely, Preston Valente and Jimmy Behling grabbed second.

Daryl Guymon responded in the 200-yard freestyle, grabbing first along with a 1:57.12. Deegan Minchey and Allen Durrant settled for second and third. Emery’s Keldan Guymon and Malone Moss were the only competitors in the 200-yard IM, which finished in Guymon’s favor to the tune of 2:18.57 while Moss finished second.

Gilbert grabbed first in the 50-yard freestyle, clocking in at 24:15. Seniors Garret Stilson and Logan Cox finished in second and third. Another first came for Gilbert in the 100-yard freestyle when the Spartan finished in 54.37. Minchey and Cox came behind, taking second and third.

Garret Stilson was the lone participant in the 500-yard freestyle, clocking in at 5:39.10. Emery’s A-team managed first in the 200-yard freestyle relay, which featured Gilbert, Cox, Valente and Willson combining for a time of 1:52.43. Jayce Rudd, Jace Jorgensen, Brennan Durrant and Jace Collard managed third.

Emery’s Parker Stilson managed second in the 100-yard back, along with teammate Levi Olsen who took third. Daryl Guymon grabbed first in the 100-yard breaststroke, 1:07.95, while Keldan Guymon and Seely took second and third.

Emery was the only representing team in the 400-yard freestyle relay. The A-team took first and a time of 4:24.42 thanks to Seely, Olsen, Cox and Durrant while the B-team composed of Behling, Jorgensen, Collard and Rudd took second.

The Emery High swim team’s next bout of action will come on Thursday as the team hosts the Southern Division Championships. The meet will be broadcast on ETV Channel 10 starting at 4 p.m.
