Gary Lee Petty was sworn in as the new mayor in Emery Town on New Year’s Day. City Recorder Tarra Payne issued the oath and Mayor Petty recited with his hand on the Bible.
According to state statute, a newly elected official can take office on the first Monday in January at noon following the election. Petty chose to do this, stating there were things he felt needed immediate attention. Other newly elected council members for Emery, Brendon Jones and Laura Nelson, will be sworn in at the regularly-scheduled town council meeting on Jan. 10.
Petty has served as mayor of Emery in past years.
