The Ferron American Legion Auxiliary (ALA) Post 42 hosted a night of chili and bingo on Saturday evening as a fundraiser for Girls State.

Participants received chili or soup and condiments plus three bingo cards for a $20 donation. A crowd of couples and families enjoyed the evening at the American Legion building in Ferron.

The American Legion Auxiliary’s Girls State program was developed in 1937. Now, it is a week long-program that draws nearly 16,000 participants from across the nation each summer to the government-in-action learning program.

“The program epitomizes the ALA’s mission to honor those who have brought us our freedom through our enduring commitment to develop young women as future leaders grounded in patriotism and Americanism,” the ALA shares. “The young women become knowledgeable of the democratic process and how our republic form of government works at the state and national levels.”

Saturday’s fundraiser will provide funding to send local youth to the 2019 program.
