Warm weather and fresh produce are most always the setting for a successful farmer’s market.
Local resident Lenore Callor brought the proposal for a farmer’s market in Helper to the city’s council members during a meeting on Thursday. One question that has previously been raised about the market was whether the taxes would balance the produce and product. Callor spoke with the State Tax Commission Special Events Center, who informed her that there are no taxes on farmers selling produce, which means that if the decision to go ahead with the market is made, there would not be taxes to be concerned about.
Callor explained that she would like to start out small and see if enough people are interested. This idea was born through the market that is hosted in Price on Saturday mornings throughout the growing season. Callor stated that she has been informed that a lot of people are unable to attend the market on Saturday mornings and would like another option. The market in Helper, if approved, would be on Friday evenings either between the time of 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. or 5 p.m. and 8 p.m.
The council members were behind the idea and also agreed with Callor that the Main Street Park would be a great location for the market. Callor has also been approached by musicians that stated they would play on the stage in the park to draw more attention.
Callor pointed out to the council members that with the market and the music, people may be drawn to the restaurants, art galleries and coffee shops that are on Helper’s Main Street as well. The farmer’s market was approved by the council members.
