Food for Thought: Blackberries

By Patti Rigby, Carbon School District Nutritional Director

Blackberries are the champions in packing an antioxidant punch! These berries are even known to prevent or reduce the risk of certain types of cancers. They are also know to prevent inflammation. Folate is another big major player in blackberries that has also been shown to reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s disease.

Also, the Omega 3 fatty acids are known to improve brain function in performance and memory. This super fruit doesn’t ripen after it’s picked so it is picked when ripe, fresh and ready to eat. Our students love this sweet, wholesome treat!
