Many local government entities, organizations and nonprofit groups in Carbon County are unaware they may qualify for a grant to assist with anything from program costs, building restoration projects and even supplies.

Carbon County Commissioners unanimously approved the purchase of a grant locating program called Foundation Search to support county departments and the community at no cost to the organizations. Seth Oveson, County Clerk/Auditor and Tami Ursenbach, Economic Development Director, spent time carefully researching several data bases before choosing one. Foundation Search has over 185,000 foundations and corporations that offer hundreds of thousands of grants.

Grants are only available for government and non-profit organizations and not given to individuals or for-profit companies. When applying for a grant, there is typically a specific time it is open for applicants and all criteria should be met and presented in a professional manner. Usually, the more facts about why the grant is needed, how it will benefit an organization or community, and how the money will be used, make the grant application more appealing.

Many are thankful to the commissioners for approving the purchase of the license and making the data base available to the community. The commissioners realize that by helping local organizations receive money through grants, it brings money from outside the area (which in turn means less money is needed from local businesses and tax payers) and helps to build the county.

“This program can help a nonprofit organization meet the needs of their program. Some grants can be applied for year-after-year and others are a one-time use grant. Either way, the time invested in researching and applying for the grants is worth the effort,” said economic development Director Tami Ursenbach,

“This is an investment for our community and we encourage everyone to utilize it,” Ursenbach stressed, “If your organization has a need, come in and meet with me to see if we can brainstorm to put a unique spin on the information. This will help make the grant stand out above other grant applicants.”

A computer is available to the public to use the Foundation Search database in the Economic Development office at the Carbon County Administration building.
