Chronic musculoskeletal pain is the number one cause of chronic disability in the United States. It is one of the most common reasons for patients to visit their doctor and adjunct medical practitioners (ie. acupuncturists, chiropractors, physical therapists, etc.). It is a frequent cause for keeping many individuals from enjoying their everyday lives.
Conventional treatments are often not successful and can leave patients with limited function and still in pain. Some of these treatment options are pharmaceuticals, narcotics, manipulation, corticosteroid injections and surgery. Often times these treatments are ineffective and research has shown that over time cortisone injections can further weaken soft tissue. They are a temporary solution to stop pain but can be damaging long term. Sadly, patients are often left without the knowledge of other alternative options.
Luckily, there is a form of treatment called Regenerative Injection Therapy (RIT), which includes Stem Cell and Amniotic Allograft Therapy. This treatment has the ability to restore function and eliminate pain. RIT does not “mask” the pain but rather it prevents degeneration from occurring and allows the body to heal itself! Collagen and cartilage growth is stimulated leading to restoration of damaged ligaments and tendons which often results in stable and pain free joints. This branch of medicine is described as anti-aging medicine. The American Academy of Pain Management, American Academy of Orthopedic Medicine and the American Association of Interventional Pain Physicians endorse Regenerative Injection Therapy (RIT) for chronic unresolved musculoskeletal pain.
From the category of RIT, Stem Cell & Amniotic Allograft Therapy has the most potential to restore function as more healing factors are present. Growth factor, hyaluronic acid and other proteins to stimulate healing are found in high concentrations with Stem Cell & Amniotic Allograft Therapy. Stem Cell Therapy can be derived from your own tissue via bone marrow or adipose tissue, requiring an invasive procedure. Whereas an Amniotic Allograft is derived from maternal placental tissue. So the minimally invasive procedure can be performed in the office and there is very little recovery time.
Working with your acupuncture and Functional Medicine practitioner before and after the procedure provides an individualized, holistic approach to restoring general health and well being and performing acupuncture on the injected site helps viability which is why I am excited to join the team at Matsuda Acupuncture and Herbal Medicine. We want to help you feel better!
