Press Release

GEAR UP’s 3rd Annual Recognition Banquet and Signing Ceremony is to be held at USU Eastern on Monday, May 20, 2019 from 6 p.m to 7:30 p.m. in the Alumni Room of the Jennifer Leavitt Student Center (JLSC).

As part of USU Eastern GEAR UP’s college access initiative, we will be recognizing GEAR UP graduating seniors and early graduates for their accomplishments. One student scholar from each of the region’s five high schools (Carbon, Emery, Green River, Lighthouse and Pinnacle) will be receiving a $1,000 scholarship to USU Eastern. The GEAR UP student of the year, who is the student who most exemplifies the “Fire of Learning,” will be also highlighted.

The goal of this night is to celebrate all students who commit to furthering their education and skills after high school by going to:

• a four-year university or a two-year college
• a technical school
• an apprenticeship program
• military service
• service or religious mission
• on-the-job training

Linda Hapsmith, the Director of the USU Eastern GEAR UP program, expects more than 30 students to participate with the help of staff, counselors and administration from Utah State University Eastern, Carbon School District, Pinnacle Canyon Academy and Emery County School District.

Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs (GEAR UP) is a federal grant program that provides services and assistance for qualifying students in order to help them successfully graduate from high school and prepare for college.
