On Wednesday, September 12, Governor Gary R. Herbert appointed Barry Lawrence to fill a vacancy on the Third District Court. The vacancy results from the retirement of Judge William W. Barrett effective November 1, 2012.

“Barry Lawrence will bring valuable perspective and analysis to the Third District Court,” Governor Herbert said. “His combination of public and private sector experience, and his years of dedication to the rule of law will be a great asset to the court.”

Lawrence comes from a background in both the public and private sectors of law. He has served as Assistant Attorney General in the Utah Attorney General’s Office since June 2000. He began working as the Torts Section Chief in 2009.

Prior to his public service, he worked at the law firm of Jones, Waldo, Holbrook & McDonough, where he was a shareholder and served on the board of directors. Lawrence earned his law degree from Syracuse University College of Law, and his Bachelor of Arts in Biology from Cornell University.

Lawrence is now subject to confirmation by the Senate. The third Judicial District includes Salt Lake, Summit, and Tooele counties.
