Greg Parsons will start his first year as head coach of the Green River boys’ basketball team. He had a long tenure coaching the girls’ team from 2003-15 and will be assisted by Kent Nelson. The Pirates went 18-9 overall last season, going a perfect 8-0 in Region 19. Unfortunately, they fell to the Milford Tigers in the second round of the state tournament.

Some of the returning athletes this year will be team captains, Rolando Anguiano and Jason Hernandez. As well as Antonio Macias, Garrett Keener, Cristian Mendoza, Gabe Quintana, David Mendez and Cristian Venzor.

“My coaching style is that our defense will be our greatest offense. Play together as a team and support each other at all times. We will be a fast-paced team, try to score easy baskets in transition, shoot the ball well and work harder than everyone else,” said Coach Parsons.

He continued on what the team has been doing to improve during the offseason, “There were not many days during the summer when the boys were not working on their game at the park or in the gym. During the preseason they have been doing two a day conditioning workouts and open gyms. These boys just love to play the game.”

“We have a tough preseason schedule this year. I feel that these games will get us prepared for the season and will be a great gauge as to where we will be, come region time. Panguitch, Tabiona, Piute, Milford, Valley, San Juan, and Monticello will be tough opponents this year.”

He was then asked about his goals and expectations for the season, “Our goal is to win our region and play all 4 days at state on the winners’ side of the bracket. We are going to have fun and they are going to work hard.”

Coach Parson ended the interview on the values he will be teaching his team, “Build a strong team culture and have the kids work hard together as a team. The boys have a great friendship amongst themselves, so I hope to help build on that and help them become great athletes and young men. We will respect our opponents but we will not fear anyone or back down from anyone. When we work together as a team, we will accomplish great things!”
