Students from Bobby Lawrence Karate-Castle Valley competed in the semi-annual interschool tournament in May. Local students joined students from 20 other Bobby Lawrence Karate schools. Events included Open Hand Kata (forms), Weapons Kata, Power Karate, Sparring, Flag Sparring and Obstacle Courses. Competitors ranged in age from 4-60.
In the age 4 White-Orange Belt Division, Joseph Erickson finished with second place in Power Karate and second in the Obstacle Course. Joshua Erickson finished his competitions in the age 7 White-Orange Division with second place in Open Hand Kata and third place in Flag Sparring. Jaycie Orgill competed in the age 7 Brown Belt Division and finished with second place in Weapons Kata and third place in Open Hand Forms and Sparring. Competing well in the 8-10 Brown Belt Division were Kayla Powell with a first place in Sparring and Ilyauna Meyers finished with a third place in Open Hand Kata. Hunter Powell finished his events with a second and third place in Open Hand Kata and Weapons Kata.
In the 11-year-old Green Belt Division, Whitney Morgan took first place in Open Hand Kata. In the 11-year-old upper Brown Belt Division, Dakota Orgill finished her events with a first place in Open Hand Kata and second place in Weapons Kata.
McKenzie Orgill won third place in Sparring in the 14-year-old Ban Bu Division while Shandy Magnuson won second place in both the Open Hand Kata and Weapons Kata in the Women’s Ban Bu Division. Cambrie Bennett and Tricia Erickson gave a strong performance in their first tournament appearance. Heather Orgill finished her events in the Women’s Black Belt Division with a third place in Open Hand Kata, first place in Weapons Kata and first place in Sparring. She was also able to claim the title of Female Sparring Grand Champion.
To finish an already amazing day, Cambrie Bennett, Shandy Magnuson and McKenzie Orgill were promoted to the rank of Black Belt. Heather Orgill was also promoted to the rank of Third Degree Black Belt.
