The Green River Pirates snapped a four-game losing streak with a home win against Whitehorse on Saturday. The team sailed past the visitors 67-54 to take the Region 19 win.

The Pirates came out with a stellar offensive output in the first, notching a game-high 24 points while allowing Whitehorse only 13. Green River’s momentum cooled in the second as the team put up only 12 but the team made up for it in defense, allowing Whitehorse only five points. The Pirates took a 36-18 lead at the half.

The teams leveled out in the third, both chipping in 18 apiece, to give the hosting team an advantage down the stretch. Whitehorse made a final push in the fourth, outscoring the Pirates 18-13, but it was not enough to take back the lead.

Trey Vetere was impressive for the Pirates, draining 20 points off of six successful buckets from downtown. Three other Pirates scored in double digits in the win, including Dawson Anderson (16), Axel Anguiano (14) and Rad Hughes (13).

Green River (5-12, 3-5 Region 19) will look to cap off region play with a win on Tuesday as the team travels to take on #1 Monticello (10-7, 8-0 Region 19). Undefeated in region play, Monticello knocked off Green River 88-52 back on Jan. 16.
