Emery Telcom has been offering scholarships to high school seniors for over 20 years. The program originally extended scholarships opportunities to students in Emery County. Years later, Emery Telcom started offering the funds to seniors in Carbon and Grand counties.
Each year, every high school senior in the tri-county area receives a letter from Emery Telcom regarding the scholarship. Out of the numerous submissions, 15 students are awarded $1,000 each.
Emery Telcom Director of Marketing Barbara Rasmussen explained that the company aims to provide funds to students who may not be considered for other scholarships because they do not have perfect grades. “We give the money to those who may not have the opportunity to have a scholarship but are good students and get decent grades,” she explained. “We look at applicants who may not have a perfect grade point average and give them priority over the 4.0 students.”
Because of limited funds, Emery Telcom will give priority to applicants who have not been awarded other scholarships or educational financial grants. In addition, all applications are considered and reviewed according to equal standards.
“Each application and essay is read individually,” Rasmussen continued. “They are reviewed anonymously by our committee.”
In order to apply for the Emery Telcom scholarship, a student must be a citizen or legal resident of the United States; must reside in Carbon, Emery or Grand County; and have a grade point average of 3.0 or higher.
Applications are being accepted until April 24. The application form must be fully completed along with two references, one person and one school, and students must provide an acceptance letter or class schedule from a two or four year post-secondary school, college, university, trade or technical school if selected as one of the winners.
Applications can be filled out online at emerytelcom.com or downloaded at the same web address and then mailed to Emery Telcom, Barbara Rasmussen, P.O. Box 629, Orangeville, UT 84537.
