Strong pitching performances powered the Helper American Legion baseball team to a pair of wins in the state tournament in Logan over the weekend.

Kyler Nelson got the start in game one on Saturday in Helper’s 15-0 win against Bear River. Nelson went all seven innings, in which his teammates helped him out with a total of 14 hits, eight of them for extra bases.

Cole Fossat and Bryce Blackburn each had a triple. Fossat also doubled twice in the game. Mark DeBry bashed a homer.

“It was a complete team effort,” said Helper manager Jeff Cisneros.

Fossat then took the mound in game two against Box Elder, a number one seed who had a bye in the first round. Helper had eight hits in the game. Fossat had three of them, all doubles. Fossat only gave up four hits in the game en route to the complete game.

Helper will now take on St. George Monday night at 8 p.m. in Logan in the winner’s bracket. St. George and Helper played back on June 27 in the St. George Tournament, in which Helper coughed up a late lead to the host team and lost 8-6.

With a win against St. George, Helper would play Tuesday night at 8 p.m. With a loss, it would play in the loser’s bracket at 5 p.m. the same day. Both games would be played in Logan.
