Scott Merrell visited the members of the Helper City Council on Thursday evening to make a special request. For the last eight years, Merrell has hosted the Lunatic Triathlon that takes place in Price. This year, he wanted to see if it was a possibility to extend the triathlon and host one in Helper as well.

The Lunatic Triathlon takes place at night. Merrell explained that 300-400 people participate each year. He also stated that he does not expect the first Helper event to have that many participants, but it is something that he would like to see grow into a larger event.

Merrell also expressed the idea that it could possibly bring increased tourism to the town. He proposed that the triathlon could take place on Aug. 24, which is a Friday evening. The members of the council gave Merrell approval to continue progress on scheduling the triathlon.

Also visiting the council was Jeff Cisneros, who has coached the Helper American Legion baseball team for 26 years and is also the head coach for Carbon High’s baseball team. Cisneros’ purpose in speaking with the council was to inform them that, for the fourth straight season, Carbon High is still lacking a field at the school. He asked the council for permission to use the American Legion Field for the season, which is scheduled to begin Feb. 26.

The council approved the use of the field from February to July and also stated that Cisneros would be priority for scheduling.
