Helper City Councilman Darren Cloward was recently detained and now faces multiple charges that include trespassing, sexual abuse and burglary.

Due to the situation being a conflict of interest, Helper City received the assistance of the Carbon County Sheriff’s Office as deputies were contacted for the investigation. It was reported that Cloward had entered a woman’s home without invitation and began to touch her inappropriately. The woman in question also reportedly stated that Cloward had previously made suggestive comments toward her.

According to reports, Cloward was intoxicated during these interactions and was even stated to have had alcoholic drinks in his hands during both. He had visited this woman’s home to retrieve his child, who was playing with another child inside the home.

While Cloward did admit to visiting the home both times, he denied entering the downstairs area where the assault allegedly took place. However, a witness stated they had watched Cloward go down the stairs.

Cloward faced another incident 14 years ago. Court documents state that a protective order was previously filed against Cloward, though the case did end up being dismissed.

On June 10, Cloward was booked into jail and faces felony counts as well as lesser counts that include the aforementioned as well as making a false statement and intoxication.

Cloward’s seat on the council filled another members departure and is up for re-election in November 2019. Helper City Mayor Lenise Peterman clarified that, as mayor, she is not allowed to force an individual to resign from the council. Cloward previously declared his candidacy to keep the seat when re-election comes.
