On Thursday evening, members of the Helper City Council gathered for the regularly-scheduled December council meeting. During this meeting, a number of items were brought to the council’s attention.
One of the items of interest was the approval of a public defender. City Attorney Jeremy Humes stated that a request for a proposal was published and two responses were received. One from the office of Oliver & Sitterud and one from Travis Blackburn.
Mayor Ed Chavez explained that there is a need to hire a public defender in the case of a person that is in need of an attorney but cannot afford one. If that person had been arrested in Helper City, they are in charge of hiring the defender, thus presenting the need to appoint one. It was agreed by the council members that Travis Blackburn would be hired as the new public defender.
Another item that was presented during the meeting was an update on the upcoming Helper City Boulder Park. Council member David Dornan spoke on this, first thanking Jesse McCourt and Waste Water Logistics as a whole for for donating several hours of loader time to move rocks that would not have been easily moved otherwise.
“I think it is going to turn out very exciting,” Dornan said.
Dornan continued by stating that council member Gary Harwood had his crew at the boulder park on Thursday complete more work and thanked them for their efforts. There have been several concerns voiced about the park in general, but Dornan stated that he believes that it is going to be a safe park for all.
He also stated that it is exciting to make a park out of resources that are found around Helper already, rather than buying playground equipment that other cities already have.
