For the past nine years, Scott Merrell has hosted the Lunatic Triathlon in Price City. Just last year, he had the opportunity to expand not only the triathlon, but visitor opportunities, to Helper City as well.

This year, the second annual Lunatic Triathlon for Helper City was hosted. Merrell remarked on the triathlon, stating that once again the kids triathlon was a great success with close to 50 local and visiting youngsters in participation. Thanks to Amber Sparks at C&E Custom Tees, all children were able to participate for free. Sparks also provided race shorts for all the participants.

Unfortunately, the Highway 6 closure that day prohibited nearly 40 hopefuls from participating in the triathlon. However, even with such a setback, there were over 100 participants in the second year.

Cedric Chun and Cindy Wong from Utah County participated in the Lunaticus Maximus alongside four locals; Will Smith, Geoffrey Smith, Tim Riley and Wayne Jensen. Smith was the winner, followed by the other three locals, respectively. Those that participated in the Maximus ran one mile, kayaked in the Price River for one mile, ran one more and then had an off-road mountain bike course that led them to the finish line.

“I would really like to thank Martin Wilson and Becky Colombo for volunteering their time and their side by sides to assist the kayakers at the river and all the participants for being patient when a train parked on the course, blocking our run route. And, of course, we couldn’t do it with out the support of Helper City, Helper City Police and the Carbon County Sheriffs Office,” Merrell concluded.
