Helper City Councilmen announced Thursday the City would charge teams and groups to use the gymnasium on the second floor of the Helper Library building.

Councilmen also announced several different plans to try to make the facility safer and make sure the facility was maintained.

Fees start at $20 per month for each team or group. A one-time $100 deposit would also be required.

Councilmen also planned to introduce a usage log designed to help keep track of when groups were using the facility when damage or problems occurred.

Group leaders might also be required to document league affiliation, medical information and rosters prior to facility usage. The change would be required to comply with insurance requirements.

Councilmen also discussed moving the available hours to 5:30-7:30 p.m. on weekdays with an additional two-hour window on Saturdays. The change would keep gymnasium use from disturbing library patrons.

“We’re trying to make this a responsibly run facility,” Helper Mayor Dean Armstrong said. “We need to try to keep this open to anyone, but we still need to keep it safe.”
