High School Tennis Comes to an End

The 3A State Tennis Tournament took place over the weekend. All players from Carbon and Emery qualified to compete in the tournament, but none of them faired as well as hoped.

Emery’s two double teams were the only competitors from Carbon or Emery that advanced to the second round and neither of them made it past that round. In first doubles, Jessie Nicholson and Haley Guymon beat out Kate Anderson and Izzy Hillner from Delta in the first round 6-2, 6-2. They then lost to Judge Memorial 0-6, 6-7 (2). Shaylee Grange and Megan Hess had success in the second doubles’ first round, defeating Delta’s Haleigh Anderson and Abby Tolbert 6-3, 5-7, 7-5. Their day would end in the next round as they lost to Juab 1-6, 2-6.

Jordynn Wolford lost 0-6, 2-6 to Delta in first singles while Carlie Bennett fell 2-6, 1-6 against Manti in third singles. In second singles, Morgan Hughes lost 1-6, 0-6 in the first round to the eventual state champion Ashley McMillan from Morgan.

For Carbon, Lindsey Snow lost to Waterford 5-7, 0-6 in first singles. Nicole Swasey was defeated 1-6, 1-6 by American Heritage in second singles while Ana Maria Olivas was swept 0-6, 0-6 in third singles by Judge Memorial. Kaydance Scovill and Maria Lopes were beat out 1-6, 4-6 by Judge Memorial in first doubles while Laurie Perry and Lizzie Blackburn were overpowered 1-6, 3-6 by Waterford in second doubles.
