On Oct. 18, Utah Highway Patrol received a report from a hitchhiker regarding a possible auto accident. The hitchhiker discovered a maroon minivan at the bottom of a 50 foot ravine approximately 47 miles west of Green River along Interstate 70.

Highway Patrol officers along with Emery County Sheriff Deputies responded to the scene and discovered the body of David L. Welch, 54 from Kansas inside the wreckage. According to UHP officials, evidence at the scene indicated that the crash may have occurred as far back as Sept. 3. Because the vehicle was located in a ravine obscured from interstate traffic, the wreckage went unseen. Unfortunately, it appeared that the victim did not succumb to injuries sustained from the auto accident immediately.

According to highway patrol, alcohol or drugs did not appear to be a factor in the accident.
