Huntington Elementary Hosts the Emery County Republican Party Convention

On Wednesday, the Republican party held a convention at Huntington Elementary for voters to meet the candidates running for county positions. The candidates were introduced and given five minutes to speak before voters cast their votes.

Candidates running for Emery County Commissioner Seat A were incumbent JR Nelson, Randy Bell and Keith Brady. The three candidates expressed their willingness to make Emery County a better place to live.

After discussing his first term as commissioner and the knowledge and experience he has gained.

“I now have the experience to serve you,” said Nelson.

For Emery County Commissioner Seat B the candidates were incumbent Jeff Horrocks, Paul Cowley and Gary Arrington. Horrocks discussed the many projects with which he is involved and asked for voters to support him. Cowley wanted voters to get to know him and shared information about his family.

There were three candidates for Emery County Recorder. Connie Jensen, Gayleen Cox and Jeff Guymon shared their experiences and desires to perform the job to the best of their abilities.

The candidates running for Emery County Attorney were Mark Tanner and Mike Olsen.

“I have applied my profession here shoulder to shoulder with you,” Tanner said. “I bring this experience to the table seeking again to serve the county as its attorney.”

Olsen has held the office of deputy county attorney for the past five years.

“I’ve prosecuted successfully hundreds of cases,” he said. “We can handle any criminal case that comes before this county. I’ve got the experience to do that and I will work for you to do that.”

The office of county clerk was unopposed and Brenda Tuttle will continue to serve. Steve Barton was unopposed as county treasurer and Kris Bell was also unopposed as county assessor. Greg Funk is running unopposed and will continue to serve as Emery County Sheriff.

“Emery County has been my life,” Funk explained. “I’ve loved Emery County, I love the citizens, I love our public lands, I love the opportunity to serve you guys, I love our deputies.”

After nominees finished with speeches, delegates voted. The position of Emery County Commissioner Seat B will be Cowley. Jensen will hold the position for county recorder and Olsen will hold the position for county attorney. Nelson and Brady will go to the primary election for county commissioner seat A.
