Helper City busily celebrated the Arbor Day holiday with various events and activities hosted throughout the area on Friday.

Helper City Mayor Lenise Peterman had previously issued an Arbor Day proclamation in support of the event and day, while both Helper Middle School and Sally Mauro Elementary joined in by presenting a variety of posters with the Arbor Day theme.

Fifteen posters were submitted by elementary students for the contest. Mikel Deeter secured first place, Veda Salow took second and Risa-Rei Jonkovsky finished in third. For Helper Middle School, there were 50 participants in the contest and Michael Shumway fought his way to the top. Luke Bradley and Bradi Laursen secured second and third, respectively.

Following the results of the poster contest, there was a tree planting ceremony that was hosted at the Helper River Walkway.

“All of these efforts were designed to stress the importance of trees in our community,” Mayor Peterman stated. “Helper City looks forward to future Arbor Day events and beautifying the city with trees in public spaces.”
