After counting all absentee and provisional ballots, the closely contested Carbon County Commissioner/Surveyor election winner was determined Tuesday afternoon. Jake Mellor narrowly defeated incumbent John Jones by 21 votes. Mellor received 2,741 total votes while Jones received 2,720 votes.
Following the Nov. 4 elections, Jones came out on top by three votes. According to Carbon County Clerk/Auditor Seth Oveson, 149 ballots remained and were counted during an election canvass on Tuesday. The outcome of the canvass determined the winner of the highly contested race.
“I am accustomed to being the underdog,” Mellor stated following the announcement. “This time, I came out on top. I want to build on the momentum and do great things for Carbon County. I appreciate all of the support I have received during this election and look forward to the opportunity to serve.”
Mellor will be sworn into office this January.
All other local election results remained the same following Tuesday’s ballot canvassing.
