The Carbon High girls swim team swam their way to a region championship during Thursday’s meet at home, defeating their closest competitor Richfield 413.5 to 325. The boys team finished second in the region, scoring 283 points to first place Richfield’s 406.

Heading into the meet, head coach Kamra Davis was hopeful that the girls could pull off the win.

“I knew they had a really good chance at winning region, but Richfield always comes to region extremely strong,” she said. “When I looked over the heat sheets the night before, I knew that if they (Carbon) had no disqualifications, they would win.”

The boys and girls teams both put forth a strong showing at the meet and many of the swimmers beat their best records by a large margin.

“Times were outstanding for both the boys and the girls,” said Davis.

The region championship was the first the girls team has won since the 90’s and the first in Davis’ record. It proved to be an emotional moment for all involved.

“To win region coaching next to my father (Stu Foster) was very emotional for me,” Davis commented. “He is an amazing man that has taught me so much. My heart breaks to be losing the group of seniors this year. What a great group. To have seven of them earn Academic All-Region says a lot about them.”

During the meet, several Carbon swimmers and relay teams qualified for state by placing first or second in an individual event or first in a relay. Some swimmers may also qualify by time in the future. (A complete list of swimmers headed to state will be published when available.) The state competition will be on Feb. 13 and 14 at BYU.
