Carbon started Thursday in the winners bracket to face off against Grand in the 3A State Softball Tournament. The Lady Red Devils proved to be difficult once more as Grand was the lone Region 12 team to beat Carbon in the regular season.

Grand jumped on Carbon early with two runs in the first inning. The Lady Dinos then cut the lead to one in the bottom half. Later in the third, the Lady Red Devils scored three more to lead by four. Again, Carbon cut the lead in half with two runs in the bottom of the third.

That is as close as it would get as Grand went on to win it 7-3. Gianna Bruno led the team with two RBIs in the loss. Haven Byerly pitched the entire game, but gave up seven runs on six hits and three walks. She struck out 13, but gave up four home runs.

The loss sent Carbon to the consolation bracket to face Providence Hall. The Lady Dinos made quick work of the Patriots, scoring three runs in the first and 10 in the second inning. Carbon ended the game in five innings with a 14-1 score. Bruno again led the team in RBIs with four after her grand slam in the second. Lyndsey Madrigal also went deep and finished with three RBIs. Brooke Moosman completed the game and only gave up three hits and one run.

The Lady Dinos then advanced to play North Sanpete. Again, Carbon started strong and put up five runs in the first inning. It was never close after that as Carbon closed it out in five innings with a 12-1 score. Madrigal went deep once more and led the team with four RBIs. Byerly was on her ‘A’ game and struck out nine batters while only giving up one hit.

The Dinos will play on Friday at 12:15 p.m. against the loser of the Grantsville and South Sevier game.
