The Carbon High girls golf team won the region 12 title last Thursday. The Lady Dinos brought home the region trophy in authoritative style according to coach Kenji Otani.

A 77 point win in the region final, at Richfield’s Cove View Golf Course, capped off what was a very successful end to region play for the Lady Dinos. With a team total of 271 points in the 18-hole tournament, Carbon finished in first place followed by Richfield with 194 points and Juab with 176.

Katie Felice and Braxton Gibson tied for medalist honors with a score of 71 points. Hailey Kirkwood scored 68 points and Taylor Hammack scored 61 to round out the top four.

The Lady Dinos also dominate the overall region standings. The team finished the regular season ranked first, with a 265-point lead over second ranked Richfield who finished the season with 641 total points. Juab rounds out the top three with 580 points.

Carbon also holds six of the top eight individual rankings. Felice was crowned the top region medalist followed by Kirkwood in second, Gibson in third, Kaycee Gilson fourth, Hammack in fifth and Kaydee Gilson in eighth place.

Otani explained that Carbon’s accomplishments are not limited to the golf course. Hammack and Kaydee Gilson were both named to Academic All-Region and Academic All-State. Both girls carry a 4.0 GPA.

“I am so very proud of my girls,” Otani stated. “The accomplishments of this team just keep stacking up. Two girls on Academic All-State, the region trophy, the region medalist, six of the eight top players and I don’t think we are done yet. Impressive! I enjoy watching them play. I can’t wait for state.”

Carbon will compete at the state tournament next week, where they are expected to perform well.
