After a slow start, the Carbon Lady Dinos responded with big quarters in the second and third against Juab to capture their first Region 12 Championship since the 2011-12 season. The Lady Dinos beat the Wasps, 44-33 on senior night.
After a very slow first quarter, a quarter in which Carbon failed to register a field goal en route to five total points, senior Taylor Oliver spurred the Lady Dinos in the second with back-to-back-to-back field goals to help Carbon regain the lead it would never relinquish. Oliver nailed back-to-back threes and a jumper in the lane during that stretch, which registered eight of her career-high 16 points. Oliver’s first three pointer was just the second made field goal of the game. Jordan Scoggins nailed a half-court shot with just .9 seconds on the clock to send the Lady Dinos into the break with a 22-17 lead.
After a 17-6 second quarter, Carbon would extend its lead at one point in the third to 11. During a 10-0 run near the end of the quarter, Lindsey Blanc and Oliver nailed three pointers, and Morgan Hillam and Oliver added two-point buckets to extend Carbon’s lead to nine, 35-26.
The Lady Dinos would increase their lead to 13 during the fourth quarter, clinching the Region 12 title.
Scoggins finished the game with 12 points, her eighth straight game in double figures. Blanc ended with seven.
As a number-one seed entering the postseason, Carbon will await one of three teams from Region 9 who could end up finishing in fourth place, Snow Canyon, Desert Hills or Pine View. Whoever it is will take on the Lady Dinos in the first round of the 3A playoffs on Feb. 21 in Price.
Carbon (15-6, 6-1 Region 12) will finish the regular season Thursday at Payson (4-14, 0-6 Region 12).
