The Carbon Lady Dinos were bested by the Union Cougars Friday afternoon in the 3A Quarterfinals, losing a third game this season to the Cougars, dropping them to the consolation bracket. The Lady Dinos would then go on to beat the Grand Red Devils before losing a heartbreaker to Manti in a game that ended at 11:40 p.m.
For the second straight weekend, weather created delays in start times during the tournament. The Carbon/Union first pitch was delayed for more than an hour because of lightning and rain in the area.
Carbon then went on to beat the Grand Red Devils 9-4 in controversial fashion. In a monster sixth inning, in which the Lady Dinos scored seven runs, a question regarding an illegal speed up runner for pitcher Brooke Moosman caused a delay in the inning. After the issue was seemingly resolved, with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, Grand protested the situation that happened in the previous inning. After nearly 50 minutes of discussion between the umpires, UHSAA officials and even additional calls to support staff outside the area, Grand’s protest was denied. On the first pitch after the delay, Moosman was able to get a Grand player to fly out to deep left field to end the game.
Cali Fossat and Makenna Pendergrass homered in Carbon’s big sixth inning. The Dinos trailed 4-2 entering the inning.
With the win over Grand, Carbon then took on the Manti Templars, who beat North Sanpete 12-9 in 11 innings to earn the matchup with Carbon. The game was supposed to begin at 6 p.m. but first pitch wasn’t thrown until approximately 9 p.m.
Dekota Kraushaar nailed a three-run home run in the top of the first inning to get Carbon on the board. Kaytlyn Cripps then scored on a Clarrisa Noyes double a few minutes later to make it 4-0.
Manti answered in the bottom half of the inning with three runs to cut the lead to one.
An error by Manti in the top of the second and a bases loaded walk gave Carbon two more runs to extend the lead to 6-3.
Again, Manti responded with additional runs to tie the score up at six apiece at the end of the second inning.
Neither team scored in the third.
With runners on second and third in the fourth inning, Cali Fossat grounded out to second base, scoring Cripps from third to take the lead back, 7-6. Carbon added another run as Moosman flared a single to right to end the inning with an 8-6 lead. Moosman was then able to get the Templars in order in the bottom half of the inning.
Both teams came up empty in the fifth, with Carbon getting a single from Madrigal who ended up on third as Cripps ground out to second to end the inning.
After Carbon went in order in the sixth, Grand tied it up at eight on a two-run homer after the leadoff batter nailed a ground rule double down the left field line.
Moosman led off the seventh with a single and advanced to second on a Manti error. After a Kennedy Nelson strikeout, Kelsey Sorenson legged out an infield single to put runners on the corners with just one out. Moosman and Sorenson, who advanced to second on a stolen base, then scored on a Madrigal grounder to short that was then thrown by the Templar first baseman to score both Dinos. Kraushaar then grounded out to second base to end the inning.
After retiring the first batter in the bottom half of the inning, Moosman gave up a single to right field. Moosman then struck out the next Templar batter before a double put runners on second and third with two outs. The next Lady Templar grounded too short, scoring the runner on third to cut the lead to one, 10-9. Kiana Pogroszewski then nailed a double to deep right-center, scoring two runs, ending the game, and the Dinos’ season, in walk-off fashion.
Carbon finishes the season winners of 20 games compared to just seven losses, including a mark of 7-3 in Region 14 action.
