The Carbon High Boys’ and Girls’ Track Teams traveled to Cedar City last week to face off against four other schools in Region 12 to vie for the title of region champions.
With a strong season and multiple firsts under their belts, the Lady Dinos walked away with third overall while the boys’ team managed fourth.
Senior Sadie Crompton ran strong in the 1600 meters, pulling out a third-place win for the Blue and White while teammate Emily Broadbear placed fifth in the same contest.
Both girls’ and boys’ teams placed fifth in the sprint medley relay while Broadbear came back in the 3200 meters for fourth.
Carbon dominated the 100 meter hurdles, with Sarah Ohlwiler placing first and teammates Megan Swasey and Alexia Johnson following with second and third, respectively. Kyle Quinton managed third in the 100 meters as well.
The Lady Dinos blew past the competition in the 4×100, grabbing first nearly two seconds ahead of second-place Richfield. Ohlwiler, Mikelle Monson, Shannon Baker and Lindsey Blanc participated in the event and currently sit with one of the fastest runs in the state, endangering a near 15-year-old school record.
Baker continued the scoring with a fifth in the 400 meters while sophomore Carter Fausett placed fifth in the boys’ 400.
Swasey continued to score, putting up a second in the 300 meter hurdles while Crompton placed first in the 800 meters. Blanc also scored a second for her team in the 200. Quinton would take second in the boys’ 200 with Derek Hillam grabbing third.
Both Carbon boys and girls took fourth in the 4×400 while Ohlwiler returned for her second first-place finish in the long jump of over 16 feet. Baker placed fourth in the long jump as well.
Jodi Noyes placed third in the girls’ shot put while teammate Caitlyn Dimick grabbed second in the girls’ javelin and fifth in the high jump. Quinton placed third in the boys’ discus.
Quinton and Hillam returned in the long jump with the former placing second and the latter fourth. The work of the duo was felt by the boys’ team, putting up 31 of the overall 33 points and sending Quinton to state in four individual events while Hillam represents in three.
Hillam would also place third in the shot put. Dimick and Noyes continued to score for the Blue and White, placing third and fifth in the girls’ discus.
“I was excited with how we did,” Head Coach Jimmy Jewkes said. “I felt really good about region and how well they came out and performed above and beyond what I asked them to do.”
Jewkes will take a total of 21 athletes to the state competition this weekend at BYU.
“Overall I’m really pleased with where we’re at,” the coach said. “We could have one of our best point performances at state this year than we’ve ever had in a long time.”
