Lady Pirates Take First Victory at Valley Buffalo Shootout, Face Losses

After being handed a loss at the hands of the Tabiona Tigers on Friday, the Lady Pirates were able to walk away victorious as they added the season’s first win to their books against the Valley Buffaloes.

Green River grabbed an early lead in the first, but couldn’t hold onto it as the teams entered third quarter action down 28-21. Tabiona continued to run the game from there, eventually taking the win 54-35.

Saturday, however, was a nail-biter for the Pirates, ending the first quarter with a close 9-8 in Green Rivers’ favor. The second ended with teams tied at 21, leaving the second half to determine the victor.

The third found Green River putting up six additional points, though Valley was right behind with four. Giving it their all, Green River pulled ahead and scored a game-high 15 in the fourth, leaving the Buffaloes behind as they took the victory with a 42-28 final score.

Green River’s Maribel Escalante shined throughout the weekend action, managing 30 throughout the tourney as well as three, three-pointers on Saturday. Teammates Savannah Williams and Daniela Mendez each put up 14 points as well as 18 and 10 rebounds, respectively.

The Lady Pirates’ looked for their next victory Wednesday as the team traveled to Wasatch Academy but was handed a 78-40 loss.

The Tigers grabbed a large 27-11 lead in the first and continued to dominate play en route to the victory.

Escalante led her team again, putting up 17 points in the action with Williams pitching in 14.

Looking for their next victory, Green River will travel to Altamont on Friday to face off against the Longhorns.
